Wait, what?

I’ve never been a fan of Kanye West’s music. I understand that he’s perceived by many as a musical genius , and I don’t dispute that, but I don’t get his shit, it doesn’t resonate with me at all. It isn’t my kind of hip hop, and I used to refer to it as “sweater vest rap” back in the day.

I’ve always admired his ego, though, his deeply held belief that he’s the greatest at whatever he does. He hit the ground running like that, by all accounts; touting his own greatness before anyone else acknowledged it, and that unwavering confidence has carried him to impressive heights, and people have listened and believed. A lot of people, actually.

I always thought that all of his high-profile antics came with a sense of self-awareness, that they were calculated, and done to make a point.

His recent Oval Office meeting with Trump has forced me to reevaluate that assessment.

Nearly everything he said made sense, I don’t think it was the nonsensical gibberish that people have made it out to be, but, man…

I felt embarrassed for him as he heaped adulation upon President Trump, abandoning all dignity and rambling on and on excitedly, jumping from one topic to the next like a kid with ADD. The entire thing was way cringey, like off-the-charts bizarre. Absolutely surreal.

He regurgitated a lot of cliched alt-right of rhetoric, and that in itself is revealing. Maybe he’s not the independent thinker I thought he was. Maybe he’s as susceptible to brainwashing as anyone else, easily swayed by crackpot propagandists online who spread their bullshit like pubic lice across America.

It isn’t that he supports Trump…I mean it is to some people, but that’s irrelevant to me. A lot of people act like they want to hook an oxygen mask up to Trump’s asshole and breathe his farts. That’s not uncommon at all, and I really don’t care anymore.

It’s not that he’s an eccentric weirdo, either. Everybody already knew that.

Put it this way, you would never see Jay-Z on TV kissing anyone’s ass like that. Even when he hung out with Obama publicly, he looked like he belonged there, like it didn’t even faze him.

It was just so awkward and sad. All this time I’d thought he was doing this thing like “Ok, this guy’s in office, it’s not going to do us any good to sit around and cry about it, let’s establish dialogue and build bridges and figure all this out together.” But it wasn’t like that at all. It’s basically just another American getting suckered in by a bunch of bullshit. The same bullshit that enthusiastic Hillary Clinton supporters fell for, I might add. All of the rhetoric and artificial sentiments from these robots that people for some reason idolize…

I recently binge-watched CNN’s “the 90s” miniseries and Bill Clinton does not come off well at all. His whole schtick he had back then does not hold up in 2018.

He got some good shit done though, so whatever. But holding him up as some kind of savior? Or doing the same with his wife? They’re fake, slippery opportunists seeking glory and prestige. Power. That’s all they are. They’re in another world.

The documentary suggested that Bill Clinton’s speech at the Oklahoma City bombing memorial “helped” his presidency, which I guess it did, but how fucked up is that? And how telling? I’m sure he felt some kind of real emotion about it on some level, but that speech was designed to make him look good.

Trump is yet another in a long line of snake oil salesmen occupying positions of power. He’s full of shit, he knows it, and he’s a master of manipulation. And I can respect him for that, in a way. And that way is the same way in which I respect Charles Manson.

“Wow, it’s really something, getting all those people to commit murder at his behest. Hats off!”

Two deeply insecure men who take great pains to project facades of invulnerability to the world, and one of them completely drops that facade to grovel at the other’s feet. That’s what I saw. That’s what I took away from that, I think.

I used to relate to Kanye. Now I can’t, because I would never act like that with any man. That shit was pretty pathetic, in my opinion.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go listen to Wu-Tang.

  1. Right, and they hated him before because of his ego. Now they think it’s cute because he’s into Trump. Kanye speaks ill of Bush? “Shut up and sing!” Kanye praises Trump? “Way to go Kanye!!!” We are truly living in a South Park episode.
